$pellcheck is an experimental pop band out of the Twin Cities and Cleveland.  Martin Dosh (Andrew Bird, Dosh, The Cloak Ox) plays keys, loops and percussion.  David King (The Bad Plus, Happy Apple, Craig Taborn) plays drumset. Mike Sopko (Bill Laswell, Glimpse Trio, Yellowstone Apocalypse) plays guitars.  Formed as the brainchild of Dosh and Sopko, with the idea of splitting an LP up between covers, originals and improvs, their debut was recorded over 2 days at the Terrarium in Minneapolis.  The bands they decided to cover are all over the place, everyone from the Heartless Bastards to Squarepusher receive their unusual treatment, running the gamut from ballads to freakouts.  Most of it was recorded live with minimal overdubs after a week of rehearsals.  It's fun, scary, and beautiful, often all at the same time.  The name of the LP is Municipal Stadium, after the legendary, beloved shithole in Sopko's hometown of Cleveland, where Dosh and Sopko spent many days watching baseball back in the 80's, dodging puddles of beer and inhaling second-hand smoke. Dosh was more or less the person who introduced Sopko to music, and King was Dosh's primary drum teacher for many years, so in a way, though they are all pretty close in age, it's a coming together of different generations, and different approaches to music. And it comes together with stellar results.
