Watkins & the Rapiers

A new collection of 14 songs, each about an individual episode of The Twilight Zone, will have its debut Friday, Sept. 13 on major streaming services and as a CD. The recording captures the live Singing Serling show Watkins and the Rapiers performed at the Rochester Fringe Festival in 2021, reviewed here by Jeff Spevak.

To celebrate the release, we’ll perform the music on the CD—complete with Rod Serling style song introductions performed by Ted Baum—as well as selections from our usual repertoire at Abilene Bar and Lounge in Rochester starting at 7:30 on September’s Friday the 13th. Admission is $10 or $15 for admission plus CD. Online tickets are available for the $15 package of admission and CD.

The release of the Singing Serling collection coincides with the centennial year of Rod Serling, who created and hosted The Twilight Zone anthology television series on CBS from 1959 to 1964, and who had strong ties to Upstate New York. He was born in Syracuse, raised in Binghamton, vacationed frequently at the family’s Cayuga Lake cottage in Interlaken, taught at Ithaca College, and died at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester in 1975.

Serling’s hometown of Binghamton is also celebrating his centennial year on Friday the 13th with the sometimes annual SerlingFest  featuring a video marathon, panels and presentations, and a statue dedication.

That noted, ours is the Serling celebration that will rock!
